Teachers Need to Know:
This observation lab will walk your students through understanding how different types of erosion impacts earth's landforms.
Estimated time: 60 min.
- Enough clear tubs for each group
- Sand, dirt, sticks, rocks
- Ice cubes
- Straws (wind erosion)
- Lego figurine or plastic animal
How it works:
Students will work in a group of about 3 students to construct a landform model. Students will fill out their erosion lab sheet either alone, or as a group.
Once the students have completed their model, the teacher will inspect, ask questions regarding the landforms, predictions, etc. to get students thinking.
4-ESS2-1. Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.
-Could include angle of slope in the downhill movement of water, amount of vegetation, speed of wind, relative rate of deposition, cycles of freezing and thawing of water, cycles of heating and cooling, and volume of water flow.
