This resource includes a hands-on science lab on weathering and erosion. It also includes a CLOSE Reading Lesson and a three page nonfiction article on weathering and erosion. Interactive Notebook flaps and folds and response pages are included.
Aligned with NGSS for 4th grade
4-ESS1-1. Identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an explanation for
changes in a landscape over time.
4-ESS2-1. Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion
by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.
Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth's materials and the flow of energy that drives this process.
MS-ESS2-2. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at
varying time and spatial scales
Utah SEEd Standard 7.2.1 Develop a model of the rock cycle to describe the relationship between
energy flow and matter cycling that create igneous, sedimentary, and
metamorphic rocks. Emphasize the processes of melting, crystallization,
weathering, deposition, sedimentation, and deformation, which act together
to form minerals and rocks.
The following science concepts are addressed:
-weathering and erosion
-comparing and contrasting
Nonfiction Reading Skills Addressed are:
-Rereading and answering text dependent questions
-Main idea and supporting details
