This is a webquest where students investigate options for healthy living in one of seven 'hipster' neighborhoods in Spanish speaking capitols. Students pretend to be living in the neighborhood and, in conjunction with google maps, look for ways to improve their eating, exercise, and general heath. After students choose their neighborhood, they follow these steps:
1) Use google maps to find a restaurant that serves healthy food. They then use google street view and the web to answer questions about cost, options, and the neighborhood.
2) Use google maps to find a mercado that has healthy food. They then use the web (if available) or inference to answer questions about food choices.
3) Continue looking at health by finding a gym, and answering questions about exercise options, costs, and overall availability.
4) Create comparisons between healthy options in their imaginary neighborhood with options in their own neighborhood.
There is a slight social justice component here, with reflection questions designed to spur a conversation about food access in our own communities. Students really enjoy exploring other cultures while thinking of their own.
This activity works well with levels 3 and 4, and goes well with the Realidades 3 text, though their is no specific vocab related to the chapter, just the theme.
I am offering this webquest at a discount price because the file was lost, and I had to scan a paper copy of it. It is not modifiable, which means you will have to change the city in the reflection question to your own city by hand before copying.
