Promote real world literacy and reinforce your students’ basic writing skills by creating a school wide postal system. Run by the kids, the school post office creates a sense of community and provides the children with opportunities to practice job related skills in a safe and secure environment.
A school wide post office is the perfect extension of the early elementary learning center where students “play” at being community helpers. This “grownup” version of a post office mirrors a real world work place where students apply for a job by completing an application, undergo an interview, perform job duties, and look forward to payday! With input from faculty and parents, a school post office is a literacy project that will provide practical writing practice for the entire school.
Our school (4th – 6th grade) has a post office established in the 1990’s and it is still going strong! Generations of students have utilized our post office, and hopefully, it has helped them to become participating members of our larger community by learning the basic responsibilities of holding a job while strengthening literacy skills in a fun, realistic way.
