Download this for a list of interactive spelling centers, as well as interactive spelling homework ideas for your students. These will help encode these simple word family words and Dolch sight words into their working memory.
You will also find here a week's worth of my newly-developed, year-long CCSS-aligned first-grade spelling unit! There is a list of pretest questions and a list of test questions, designed to help with vocabulary development of the spelling words. A set of spelling word cards follows, sized just right for index cards (think flash cards for those brief "empty" moments, standing in line, or for parents to use at home). These can also be printed on card stock and laminated, and become a permanent part of your word wall. Ultimately, in this unit, there will be the first 175 Dolch words, and word families comprised of the first 38 most commonly used rimes (according to Frye).
Next, you will see a worksheet activity for students to begin to see words as chunks; identifying letters as ascending, descending or staying level. And finally, three activity sheets rich with possibilities! These are sentence puzzles using the spelling words of the week. According to ability levels, students can use these independently [in black and white if color is unavailable]; in a center with a partner [after being printed in color on card stock and laminated]; or with adult assistance as needed. These will help with sentence formation, vocabulary development, and reading and writing foundational skills.
Have a fantastic new year!! Edugarden aka Martha J Isleib
