Thank you for choosing this flipchart on idioms! I used ActivInspire to create this flipchart.
This is meant to be a short daily activity. Reader's Workshop time is jammed packed and in my district our poetry unit is 2 weeks! Nowhere near enough time to get in everything. So why not spend 5 minutes a day on idioms?
This flipchart contains a week's lesson on idioms! Each day (Monday-Thursday) introduces a new idiom, its meaning and origin, and a sample notebook entry so students can keep track of the idioms and their meanings. I am no artist, though I wish I were, so my sketches are very, very basic but they work for me! They are included to give you an idea of how I teach idioms. By giving students a chance to make their own sketch for each idiom it has now integrated the arts and has become personal to each student! Hopefully they are then more likely to remember the idiom and its meaning. After learning 4 idioms there are short passages for an interactive (ActiVotes or ActivExpression) assessment on Friday.
Like what you see? Then keep an eye out for a longer version that will teach popular idioms for the duration of a few weeks.
