This is everything you need to create a Weekend Stories
Journal for your students. Along with the cover page, there are 2 different picture papers with matching lined paper meant to be copied front to back. There is also a smaller spaced lined paper to use if you don’t want illustrations. However, the picture frames could be used as space to write a title in. Copy as many pages as needed and staple as a journal for your students.
I’ve also included the 3 star rubric I’m using with my students. It’s a quick and easy way for students to think about how they’re doing. When they are finished writing, they color in the amount of stars they think they deserve. I’ve included a blank rubric so that you can customize your criteria. The bookmarks (and blank bookmarks) ensure students have the expectations right with them while they're writing!
Narrative writing is part of most all elementary classrooms. I use these journals right from the start! Make them part of your classroom routing on Mondays. I give my students an option to tell a story about something that happened over the weekend OR to tell another true story about themselves.
Having students keep all of their stories together in a dated journal is a great way to track their writing progress over a period of time. You can assess handwriting, spelling, and content in one place. I use these journals when I work on report cards and frequently share them during parent conferences.
They also make great keepsakes for parents and students at the end of the year!
