Weekend journals are an engaging way to allow students to reflect and write about what they did over the weekend. This not only helps them reflect, but also fosters communication between them and their peers. Students will be sharing more about themselves and their interests at home with their friends, and it's also a great informal assessment tool as you monitor their growth throughout the year.
I prepare these monthly, printing out the cover page and providing enough journal pages based on how many weeks there are in the month. Students will complete these as their morning work each Monday morning, and when finished, will share out with a partner. Sometimes I will pick a few friends each week to share with the class during our morning meeting.
