As soon as students enter my classroom, their first activity, or "bellringer," is already displayed on the board for them to complete while I take attendance, answer questions, hand out materials, etc.
Each day of the week has a themed bellringer:
-Mechanics Monday: Students are given a sentence to correct on their own before we go over the corrections as a class. This is great for grammar mini lessons.
-Trending Topic Tuesday: Students are given a writing prompt that goes along with something we are currently reading or something popular in the news.
-Wordy Wednesday: Students work on using context clues to learn new vocabulary words.
-Think-About-It Thursday: Students creatively respond to a writing prompt (this is always our favorite day).
-Freewrite Friday: Students write about any topic that they choose.
Bellringers are the foundation of student participation in my classroom.
