I have found this to work very well to keep students accountable for their Independent Reading while practicing with skills that we focus on in class. I will usually post a specific focus (character, tone, conflict, or any other CCSS standard that I have used in a lesson) in class for students to copy onto their sheet. They can then practice with that skill or standard using their independent reading book. Can be done in class during reading Workshop or for HW. From there I try to conference or write suggestions to help guide students toward mastery of the focus or skill.
In a typical Reading Workshop model- I aim to have students complete 2-3 responses per week (some graded, some not) as formative assessments.
