These weekly STEM Exploration Challenges were created to engage your students in STEM on a daily or weekly basis, without much prep on the part of the teacher.
Students utilize the materials in their STEM exploration kits to complete a weekly building challenge. Over the course of the year (36 challenges), the tasks become more difficult.
There are editable task cards and labels included as well.
Included are labels for your kits and weekly challenge cards that you can print off our display with a projector. More detailed information about how to create kits and how to run this activity is also included.
Please note this activity requires access to building materials. You decide what materials are available to your students. I provide suggestions, but it will be a small investment if your school cannot help with supplies.
You can use these STEM activities in a variety of ways in your classroom… You can have students use these independently, or in partners or small groups. You can use these as daily morning work, weekly classroom challenges, a STEM center, behavior rewards, indoor recess activities, or with early finishers. There are so many options!
The activities are simple, but I like to use them over the course of multiple, short periods so that students have time to rethink their design, choose a different material, and observe others’ ideas. I believe this results in meaningful engagement with the engineering design process.
