A useful strategy to use with students that have high anxiety about attending school...and ITS FREE!!!
Strategy: I have students in my class with high levels of anxiety that need to know what is happening each week. When I write my timetables, I also make them on the computer with visuals for those students. I outline what is happening during the week and include pictures to help children understand. I send my timetable to the parents each weekend. They cut the timetable into strips and place it on the fridge or along side the child's breakfast each morning and run through what is happening each day. It is colour coded and includes images from the wonderful http://www.sparklebox.co.uk/ (free with the download of their toolbar).
Results = children less anxious about being in the classroom. This makes for a smooth transition from Parent to the Classroom learning environment. I highly recommend trying something like this. It has made my mornings much easier and less stressful. Plus the children often remind me of what is happening throughout the day!!!
