This vocabulary packet can be used for any word list. It is set up for lists of ten words, but you can add or delete sections for longer or shorter lists, as the document is in Word format.
This packet is set up to give students repeated exposure to their vocabulary words, beginning with familiarizing themselves with definitions and working up towards using their words in a variety of ways.
The packet includes the following sections:
Day 1 - Students are assigned their word lists. They find definitions, synonyms, root words, and parts of speech for each word.
Day 2 - Students draw (or find via google image search, in magazines, etc.) pictures or symbols that represent each of their vocabulary words.
Day 3 - Students find example sentences for each of their words, then use context clues to better understand the meaning of each vocabulary word.
Day 4 - Students use each of their words in a sentence, poem, story, or comic strip.
Day 5 - Students turn in their vocabulary packets and take a quiz. On the quiz, students will be asked to provide definitions and synonyms for specified words, use words in a sentence, and connect their vocabulary words to their own lives.
** Throughout the week, students are also challenged to use their words in conversation, recording this on their "Casual Conversation Log" when they do so. Students are also asked to use their words in dynamic ways and engage in active review in completing two extension activities throughout the week. They are able to choose from over 10 different activities, from making flashcards to translating their words (this is especially good for bilingual students) to creating analogies.
I'll also add that my students LOVE these packets. Several of them have been finishing early and asking for next week's list, and they're always sad when we skip a day of vocab!
