This packet contains reproducibles to construct a notebook for each student to reinforce vocabulary, non-fiction writing vocabulary, and sentence structure and grammar. These weekly exercises incorporate GLAD strategies as well as non-fiction writing strategies.
Reproduce the Student Page to make books for each student. (I use the 3 hole-punch manila report folders for these, putting 28-30 pages in each student’s book, but you can also make quarterly or monthly books as you see fit.) Select and reproduce the two activities you wish to use for the week and distribute the pre-cut pages. Have the students use a glue stick to place the activity box in the appropriate space in their Word Work Notebooks.
There is a “Word of the Week” at the top of the page and two empty boxes below. (I have included an explanation of this in these instructions and on one of the 3 "quick reference" pages.) You have the option of changing the two other activities from week to week. I have included six different options, two of which are described in these instructions. The others are self-explanatory.
2. Sentence Patterning Chart
3. “Three things I learned about…”
4. Word List
5. Lined writing page (for editing/DOL/your call!)
6. 3 boxes (for sequencing/listen & sketch/your call!)
This strategy is helpful in incorporating Common Core Standards, ELD strategies, and ownership of reading and writing skills for your students. The notebook can be used individually, in small groups, or as a whole-class activity.
**UPDATED** I added tri-form pages for each of the inserts for easier photocopying.
