Simplify…Simplify…Simplify… and here is the ticket!
We all want life to be a little easier and a little more predictable, right? I am happy to share with you a Language Arts tool for 1st and 2nd graders that will simplify your life, and make your little ones fantastic sentence writers.

This 218 page packet can be used as homework or in writing centers. It is aligned with the Common Core. There are 45 writing prompts that are progressive throughout the year. Each week students write either a 2, 3, 4 or 5 sentence response to the prompt. Early in the year, students start with the 2-3 sentence prompts and progress to 4-5 sentence prompts as their writing skills develop. The prompt is assigned on Monday, and the homework is returned on Friday. Each prompt has a poster, writing paper, and a self assessment checklist. All three share the same graphics for the prompt, so it is simple to identify the set. The terms "Give Me ..." indicate how many sentences are required for that week of writing.

There are many ways to use any mix of the pages enclosed, but here is one of my favorite ways for homework. Make copies of the writing paper on the back of the self assessment checklist pages, for all of the "Give Me 2," and "Give Me 3" prompts. Punch holes in them and put them in a 10 cent folder, with the cover page on top. Fill in the student's name, and send them home on the first day of school. Hang the poster that matches the prompt for the week on the board to refer to. THE GRAPHIC MATCH, SO IF THE STUDENT GETS HOME AND DOESN'T KNOW WHICH PROMPT TO RESPOND TO, THEY CAN JUST MATCH THE GRAPHIC. On Thursday, the teacher points to the poster and reminds everyone to return their sentences to school the next day. EASY-PEASY!
