This is a simple, but very effective way of keeping track of short term goals; each year—and included in my “First Days” survival pack—we as educators ask students’ to create long terms goals such as make honors, write a perfect five paragraph essay, read a book a week, never miss a day, etc. And, long term goals have real validity, but short term goals are all the sweeter because one can celebrate weekly successes. Every Friday, we, including myself, reflect on the prior week’s goal, as in….did I accomplish it? Did I need to revise/tweak it to be successful? Is there something that prevented me from reaching my goal? What? Why? Then, I post a “Weekly Goal” topic—for example, one act of kindness, something that can help your learning, one fear you can conquer, a health goal, a community and service goal, ETC. Students really respond to setting short term goals for themselves and I must admit, I, too, stick with the goals I choose for myself….now, if only I could go beyond my weekly goal of getting daily exercise!!
