In this middle school lesson designed for the Common Core students analyze a series of primary and secondary sources to reach a conclusion regarding the events of the Boston Massacre. Students must decide whether or not the British soldiers were guilty of murder. They must analyze each source based on its reliability and the information it provides before writing an ARE conclusion statement.
Each source is presented to the class and students are given a couple minutes to rate it and provide a reason. After sharing a few responses to model historical thinking students may change their rating. At the end of the lab all ratings are added up providing students with a direction for their thinking.
