Practice Dolch Sight words aligned to the Superkids Reading Program. Use Google Slides to present the engaging competitive game. Students choral read sight words together for practice, then divide into two teams to correctly read the given fly sight word.
Y’all. My regret from last year? That I didn’t start this game earlier. My firsties seriously loved this, and it soon became a go-to “brain break” during ELA time. And we played it almost every day during the last week of school with complete engagement. And I had some reluctant readers, trust me.
The best part for me was the confidence it built for my struggling readers. By focusing on a set, small group of sight words, which are reviewed as a whole group before starting the game, it helps to level the playing field.
My rules for the game were simple. I divided the class into two teams. They lined up. We practiced the words together as a class with the review slides. ALL students HAVE to have eyes on the board, reading. We will start over at the beginning of review if not. Once it’s time to play, all students must have eyes on board, no talking, and the first two players read their word. Each team has a different word; I choose to award both teams points if the word is read correctly. Watch out though, there are change up point cards. Is your fly still alive? +1 point. A squashed fly? -! point. I keep a tally of points, but remind the kiddos it’s totally random because of the change up cards.
The words used in the six provided Google Slide Games are: the, see, like, can, a, I, is, for, you, said, to, was, of, and, put, no
My school uses the Superkids Reading Program. This set includes all 12 memory words reviewed in Welcome Back, Superkids! plus 4 additional words I felt needed to be quickly mastered right as we start the year.
When you purchase, you will simply email me at the provided email address and I will grant you access to the Google Drive folder with the six Google Slide games!
