In an effort to increase the ratio of self-selected reading to whole-class texts in the curriculum, consider a book tasting event! This is a simple way to get students to “sample” a variety of literary genres in order to find their preferred “tastes” in reading.
Make it your own by turning on music, decorating your tables/room as though it's a restaurant, and greeting students with an apron and chef's hat.
I normally set up 4 tables of books in various genres. Students circulate to choose their first selection. Walking through the menu from appetizer to dessert, they spend about 7min with each book, answering questions along the way. At the end, they rank their featured fav and we follow up with a visit to the library for checkouts.
Great start of the year fun, or can be used as an intro to lit circles. This pared down version of the brochure can be upgraded and personalized to fit your needs.
