This resource provides students with the frame of reference and context they need in order to understand the context of dystopian novels and short stories. The materials will provide a great introduction or supplement to any dystopian literature genre unit!

The high-interest Introduction to Dystopian Literature Slides presentation includes 24 slides that outline the dystopian literary genre, rich images, traits of dystopian societies and the dystopian protagonist, and links to popular young adult dystopian film and book trailer clips for students to view as a frame of reference. Just play the video clips and view from the Google Slides Presentation!

Video clips include relevant film excerpts from Matched by Ally Condie, The Giver by Lois Lowry, The Eye of Minds by James Dashner, iRobot movie trailer, and Unwind by Neal Shusterman!

Students use the Intro to Dystopian Literature question sheet to fill in notes and answer questions on the differences between a utopian world and dystopian, the types of control used for the oppression of society in dystopian fiction, the common characteristics of dystopian protagonists, and notes to stimulate a discussion as to the author’s purpose in writing a dystopian work.

The second activity, The Dystopian Story Analysis Response Sheet, can be used for the literary analysis and close reading of any dystopian short story or novel.
For the third activity, students will apply their knowledge of dystopian settings in the high-interest Dystopian Images Analysis.

A Dystopian Images Analysis Google Slide Presentation is also included featuring 20 slides showcasing paintings, photos, or images that contain details or words reflecting the traits and characteristics of a dystopian society.
Students will enjoy analyzing a different “text type” through the viewing of photos and paintings and analyzing each for visual elements that reflect the common themes in dystopian fiction. A teacher’s answer key is included to help teachers facilitate additional discussion with their students!

Unsure as to how to use these teaching resources with dystopian fiction?
An implementation guide is included - along with an online library with 12 Dystopian short stories written for teens and tweens!
