In small groups, students work to create a “document for public use,” so to speak, educating the public about Maycomb, Alabama and its citizens. This mini-lesson is taught in tandem with Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
Students use multiple mediums (computers, iPads, markers, crayons, music, video, Post-It large boards, poster-board, etc.) for this assignment.
They combine attentive reading and annotation of the novel with creative genius for this assignment.
Once finished with their work, they present to the group.
• Create a travel brochure that showcases popular spots for visiting and vacation in Maycomb. Be sure to include the weather patterns, sites, historical facts, etc.
• Create an overview/evaluation of the Maycomb school district. Explain who the teachers are, their methods of instruction, background, philosophy, etc. Describe the composition of the class.
