This is a valuable lesson to do before reading The Giver. Students always reference it while we're reading the book.
Here's how it works: Paste each element of a perfect society (on second page of this document) onto to a piece of construction paper before class. Divide the students into five groups.
At the beginning of the class, ask students what they know about utopias. After a brief introduction, introduce the sample element and discuss the pros and cons together.
Next, pass out the graphic organizer. Give each group one element to start. After about 3-4 minutes, call SWITCH, and have students pass the elements to the next group.
Leave about 10-15 at the end of class to discuss the pros and cons of each element. Poll them to see which elements would be included in their perfect societies.
