For many years, I had used various strategies to reward my classes for appropriate classroom behavior. We had filled a jar with marbles; we had earned compliment points; and we had used sticker charts – all extrinsic motivators.
I was tired of whole class rewards and I felt that I wanted kids to behave because they were growing and learning to be good citizens – an intrinsic motivator.
