This is a fun worksheet that can be used to familiarize students with commonly used similes, as well as the concept of cliches. The activity is suitable for a range of ages and abilities and can be easily modified to suit your needs/goals.
Students are given a list of 40+ similes along with their meaning and notes on any specific usage intended (for example: calm as a millpond usually refers to water surfaces, not to people).
Students are then asked to identify stronger similes vs weaker similes (cliches); to create their own, unique similes, and to illustrate the imagery and meaning conveyed by the simile.
Intended to engage a variety of learning styles, this worksheet can be as quick or as involved as you need it to be!
