Old Phoenix Jackson in Eudora Welty's short story "A Worn Path" has several problems during her journey to the city. How she solves these problems may not be the way your students would do it, and they may have better ideas on what to do if they were in her shoes than she does. Students are to fill out the Problem Solving Model below exploring Phoenix's options and the benefits and shortcomings of the options. Students are then asked to come up with better solutions to the obstacles Old Phoenix Jackson has in front of her.
By apply the step-by-step model, the students will be able to defend and justify their beliefs in a logical and coherent manner. High Order Thinking Skills are going on during this practice!
