At the end of your unit on the West Region, assign students a project that will excite them and provide varied opportunities for extension! Students will select an option from the project menu to complete. These project options touch on the history and geography of the region. Rubrics with student friendly language are included for each of the region projects. Rubrics can be used for both instructing students of project requirements and assessing their work.
Students can explore an important aspect of Hawaii as they create a volcano model and research related facts. They can link to the region's history by creating a series of 49er's journal entries or a model of a ghost town. If students aren't as interested in the history, give them the opportunity to research the media as they prepare a poster on film making.
My students select a project at the end of each region's unit. They couldn't be more excited for the new project menu to be handed out. Motivate your students with a choice of quality projects!
