PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Resource is an introduction to Andrew Jackson's Native American policies and the concept of manifest destiny. Students read a speech by Andrew Jackson outlining his policies and beliefs towards Native Americans. Difficult words are defined in a side column for struggling readers. Students complete a "determining importance" graphic organizer, where they select three quotes from the document that they think are important and explain why. Finally, students examine the painting "American Progress" by John Gast and relate it back to Jackson's speech. An annotated version of the painting is also included to help the teacher analyze the painting with students. Resource is great to introduce students about attitudes and policies towards Native Americans during the period of westward expansion.
