There are 3 main activities:
Westward Expansion Vocabulary:
Introduce the 10 vocabulary words with the real-life photo posters included. You could post these posters around the classroom and have students travel around to match up and define the words in their flip flaps or use as a center activity. These colorful posters are excellent for a bulletin board display too!

Informational Articles:
Have students complete the Anticipatory Set with 8 True/False questions. Next, have students read the informational articles and complete the activity that goes along with each one. Each article has questions and scenes for students to connect and color. Next, read the character studies where students will Meet Lewis, Meet Clark, Meet Sacagawea, and Meet Thomas Jefferson. The character studies come in color and black and white for students to color. You could have students work with a partner or in small groups. It could also be used as a center or learning station activity.

Westward Expansion Activities:
There are five custom-created graphic organizers to use at learning stations, to highlight key information, and/or for review. Have students complete the Thomas Jefferson Mini-booklet with timeline, W-E-S-T Tabs Mini-booklet, Map Activities, Timeline Activity, Western Expansion Mystery Flaps, and Writing Prompts. These activities work excellent at centers or for a learning station. They are perfect to use in their social studies interactive notebooks, too.

Meets the Georgia Performance Standards for SS4H6
Students will explain westward expansion of American between 1801 and 1861.
a. Describe territorial expansion with emphasis on Louisiana Purchase, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the acquisitions of Texas, Oregon Trail, and the California Gold Rush.
b. Describe impact of steamboat, steam locomotive, and the telegraph on life in America.
c. Describe the impact of westward expansion on Native Americans (Trail of Tears).
