This project has students broken up into groups of 4 creating a children's story with illustrations. There is a rubric that goes along with the assignment as well as a short story set up to help them get their ideas down. They can chose between topics of Westward Expansion listed below.
This took my 7th grade students 4 65minute class periods to complete.
Directions on the paper:
Directions: You will be working in groups to make a children’s book on a topic off Westward Expansion.
*You are to make a book with at least 8 pages total. That means you will be responsible for at least 2 pages. Each page must include a color picture, hand drawn, which must match the writing.
Each page must include at least one paragraph of writing (4-5 sentences) on each page.
You must also include a cover page, which is colored with your topic, including all of your groups names.
When finished you must have a summary of the book on the back page, for some WOW points you can draw and color a picture.
You must work as a group to decide what topic you want to write about, and then to decide what you want to make your story about. Your story must flow smoothly (meaning when I turn the page the story makes sense). To help you decide what you are to write you can look at your notes, and in the textbook.
After all pages are colored and written, the book must be bound (put) together, either stapled, with yarn or another creative way you can think of.
Topics to choose from:
* Louisiana Purchase
* Annexing (Adding) of Texas (Alamo)
* Mexican American War (Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Gadsden Purchase)
* Indian Removal Act and Trail of Tears
* Manifest Destiny
* Adding of Oregon and California (Oregon Trail)
* Gold Rush
