Students create a newspaper article by picking a topic from Westward Expansion. They create their newspaper article and the teacher complies this for each student and makes a class newspaper/magazine. I have done this with both Middle and High School and it has worked out great.
Here are the directions on the assignment:
Directions: As a class we will be creating a newspaper. Your job will be to pick a topic from Westward Expansion and write a newspaper article and draw a picture to go with your photo. Below you will have to list what topic you have (Gold Rush, Lewis and Clark Expedition, Mexican American War etc.), the day, month and year of your article (make sure it matches your event), the title for your article, your rough draft, and a description of your photo. When you are writing remember the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, and WHY! When you are done with your rough draft, have someone in this class proofread it, then place your final copy with your hand drawn picture on your final paper.
