Guidelines for students on how to create a poster for a given topic based upon westward expansion and manifest destiny. Projects are completed in partnerships. Once projects are complete, they can be used to create a timeline display.
Topics for Posters:
Louisiana Purchase & Lewis & Clark, War of 1812, Indian Removal Act, Conflict wit Native Americans & Settlers (Apache Wars, Little Crow's Uprising, Battles of Little Big Horn & Wounded Knee), Annexation of Texas, Trail West (Santa Fe, Oregon, California, Mormon), Mexican- American War, Gold Rush, Ideas and Inventions
- Project overview and guidelines for students
- Topic cards with specific guided research questions for each group,
along with other requirements for their specific poster
- Grading Form and Partnership Evaluation
- Separate (but similar) trading card project for potential ESL or special needs students. These trading cards may be useful for those who need a lot of extra support with the research process or who are learning vocabulary terms. This project is much more basic than the poster, but final product can be added to the class timeline.
Buffalo, Mountain Men, Pioneer, Expansion, President Jackson, Frontier, Homestead Act, Manifest Destiny, President Polk, Soddy
While partnerships/groups present information to the class, students can take notes and then discuss the positives and negatives of westward expansion.
