This project guide and grading checklist will help your students analyze the different characters that lived during the era of Westward Expansion. It requires students to "think out of the box" and choose 4 items that represent certain topics, like impact on the environment and conflict/cooperation between populations of the West. Students will then write a paragraph and explain how their item reflects each description! It's a great cross-curricular assignment between Social Studies and Language Arts, and it requires some creative thinking! After students choose their items and write their paragraphs, they create a "time capsule" and then can present their items, one at a time, in a "show and tell" format.
