This unit was created to introduce westward expansion to a fourth-grade classroom as new information. The unit focusing on two NCSS standards and one Discipline. The objectives and themes that will be met will be culture, culture diversity, time, continuity, and change. What the students will be going over in accordance to Westward Expansion are motivations of the people at that time, specific events that happened based on the time and geography of the nation, understanding the time period through learning about primary sources and communication, and relating past ideas to present day. All this learning will be done through interdisciplinary action to help the students become better critical thinkers, more engaged learners and embrace the connection between all learning instead of separating it. The unit includes three lessons that all have uses of literature and writing, cooperative group work, incorporation of audio, visual, and textual sources, and utilization of computer technology.
