“Whack” games can be used to review concepts or in a game day. This specific version is for review and reinforcing sight-words from the Fry’s First 100 List 3 & 4 (50 Words). This activity also facilitates on-the-go assessment of which students have the concept and how the group as a whole is progressing.
Although you may use this packet anyway you like, I will give the procedures I use.
Materials: “Whack” file, projector, something for students to “whack” with. I use giant flyswatters from Dollar Tree but you can use anything including the children’s hands (beware of injuries if you go this route.
1.) Divide the class into three or four groups (as many as props to “whack” with)
2.) Instruct children to line up in relay lines
3.) The teacher says or spells a word from the page and first person to “whack” and say (if you spelled it) earns a point for their team.
4.) I usually go through every word on the page twice and then move on to a more difficult page (in this case, more difficult words or more lettered words)
