Whale strandings are a fascinating topic for all students. These beachings and marine mammal deaths tug at our hearts and appear on our news feed more than we would like, yet we humans are more or less powerless to stop them. In the past two hundred years, researchers have put forth over 200 theories for the existence of whale strandings, yet none of these can be scientifically proven and these deaths remain a speculative mystery.
This Common Core-aligned article examines the tragic beaching and death of whales and is written for use in Grades 5-8. It can be implemented in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, absence work, homework, test prep, assessment, centers, etc). Please see the Preview for part of the text and all the assessment questions.
