Whales are so popular with the kids, and they’re interested to learn there are nearly 100 different kinds. This project offers an easy way to tie in some science, and I love how it involves multiple art techniques. The children learn to draw a whale, and they love getting to choose one of 12 different whales. Included are line drawings and step-by-step instructions for 12 whales: the beaked, beluga, blue, bowhead, fin, gray, humpback, minke, narwhal, orca, right, and sperm whale. The kids really enjoy experimenting with the paint and learning some new techniques for working with watercolors. And drawing the repeating patterns in the waves is a relaxing activity that adds a lot of charm and to their artworks.
Time Required: 90 minutes-2 hours, broken into 2 classes.
The 33-page project includes:
-Project Overview + Learning Objectives
-Fun Facts About Whales
-Recommended Books + Word Wall (with Definitions)
-Photo Tutorial for Drawing, Painting + Patterns

-Line Drawings of 12 Whales
