This is a great activity for all classrooms, but I found my Gate classes especially enjoyed the out-of-the-box thinking. You need to find odd objects from around your classroom, house, garage, or even thrift stores. I use a tire pressure gauge, citrus peeler, cassette tape (believe it or not)they don't know what a cassette tape is. I have the students work in groups to complete the worksheet and while completing the worksheet they are trying to come to conclusion on what their item is. However many items you have is the number of groups you will have. I always have each group share in front of the class their item and what they think it is and might be used for and then I reveal what is really is and used for. This is great for higher level thinking and problem solving.
