Leading up to the Civil War, people in the North had completely different view points than people in the South. This assignment has students look at how each side felt, to better understand why they were willing to go to war.

This assignment really helps students to understand the mind set of the North and the South. History is best understood when you understand how each side felt.
This assignment could easily be assigned as homework.
I give my students a participation grade for attempting it, and not based on right/wrong answers. We discuss each quote as a class after students have completed it.
