Product Description

This exercise can be used to teach students about team roles and the behaviors that can positively and negatively influence a team's ability to succeed. It is written for middle and high school students, but the roles and reflection can be modified slightly for a younger classroom as well.

In this lesson, students work in groups (4-5 students) to build a large, free standing tower out of balloons and a small amount of tape. The tower must be able to stand on its own without the support of a chair, wall, table, or students. Each group receives the same materials, and each student within the group is assigned a “group characteristic”, which are positive and negative qualities that a group member might bring to the team. The students must complete the challenge while acting within their characteristics. The students complete a short reflection at the end of the challenge about the activity and how the negative and positive characteristics affected their ability to work together. Have the students complete the reflections independently, then discuss together as a class.

Material Needs:

· ~10 deflated balloons, per group

· ~1-2 ft of tape, per group

· 1 characteristic per student (provided in this document)

o I usually have these in a “hat” the kids select from

· 1 reflection worksheet per student (provided in this document)
