If we want our students to be avid readers, we have to help them find their literary perfect match. These two activities are designed to match each student with a book that will catch their interest.
The first activity is designed to mimic the personality quizzes you see frequently on social media. Students answer ten questions that are used to identify the genre in which they would most likely find interesting books. After the quiz, the presentation offers a number of authors that they can search for when they go to the library. These authors are the tried and true winners that I often refer my own students to.
The second activity is designed to mimic Speed Dating. You choose a number of books (one for every student in your class) in a variety of genres. I usually simply go to my school library and check out the books for one day. Then, student rank the books on their attractiveness, communication skills and personality. A ranking guide is included in this presentation. When the activity is done, students have a typed sheet on which they have ranked books that can guide them when they to the library to check out books. I do this activity a few times during the year when I want to give my students a chance to try out new authors or genres that they normally would not pick up.
I have done these activities successfully with regular education and special education students. The Powerpoint is fully editable so you can personalize it to meet your needs.
