This is the introduction to Russel's book. I use this when I start the year's writing. I know that high school students have written five paragraphs essays before and so we analyze this one and see how it different and effective. Then the assignment comes. The students are to use a metaphor comparing themselves to something and then write three paragraphs proving this. For example. Music composes my life stanza by stanza. They work for one class period on a thesis sentence that must compare them to something using a metaphor. They work in groups of four. The next day, they are to have three topic sentences that provide more proof for the thesis. The next day, they write the rough draft. Lastly, they add a introduction and conclusion. Another requirement is that each paragraph must have some connection to the metaphor.
