Use this fun craftivity to teach about a specific adaptation in 11 animals: their feet! The idea for this stemmed from the book “What If You Had Animal Feet!?” I love this book by Sandra Markle!!& so do my students!!
It is such a fun way to teach children about animal adaptations, specifically how different types of feet ensure an animal’s survival. It is also a great way to address one of the 3rd grade Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) : 3-LS4-2: Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.
How does a basilisk run across the surface of water? Which animal can walk upside down on the ceiling? I love how the book asks our children to imagine if they had animal feet & then shows them using beautiful yet funny illustrations. It’s also full of fun animal & feet facts.
I created the worksheets and craftivity to go along with the book. There are 3 worksheets listing all 11 animals covered in the book: kangaroo, housefly, basilisk, cheetah, wolf, platypus, owl, aardvark, millipede, goat, and rhino. Students must describe the different types of feet and then think of what the survival advantage is (answer key included.) I’ve also included patterns for all 11 different types of animal feet, body pattern, and name label with and without a writing prompt (see photo above.) The book is available in paperback on Amazon.com
Ms. Markle was kind enough to allow me to use the image of her book in this lesson plan. Hope you and your students enjoy!
