More Info:

This resource includes a reading passage with comprehension questions, a vocabulary task about multiple-meaning words, word searches, and a crossword puzzle. After using the materials in this resource, students who are unfamiliar with impeachment will have a greater understanding of what impeachment is. The reading passage is written in easy-to-understand English so English Language Learners at an intermediate level of language proficiency (and higher) will be able to comprehend the text.

The reading passage materials include a glossary to aid students when reading the text, with words presented in the order they appear in the passage. Two versions of the reading passage are included: 1 that is text-only and 1 with photographs to aid students’ understanding of the content. There is also a page with 10 comprehension questions about the text and an answer key is provided for your convenience.

In addition, a 1-page task about multiple-meaning words is included in this resource. Some of the words in the reading passage have more than 1 meaning and the task for students is to find and write down the other definitions of the words. This helps all students, but especially ELLs, expand their vocabulary.

The word searches are available at 3 levels of difficulty, based on the direction the words are written in the puzzle, so they can meet the needs of all your students, including ELLs. Answer keys are provided for all the puzzles. There is also a word bank for the crossword puzzle for students who need additional support.

The vocabulary words in the puzzles are: acquit, article, bribery, committee, Congress, Constitution, convict, hearing, high crimes, House, impeachment, judge, misdemeanors, office, president, resolution, Senate, Supreme Court, trial, treason. (The glossary contains different words.)

Both Print (PDF) and Google Drive™ versions are provided in this resource. The PDF file includes teacher notes, instructions for accessing the online materials, instructions for completing the puzzles as well as the glossary, 2 reading passages, the comprehension questions and answer key, the multiple-meaning task and answer key, and all the word searches and the crossword puzzle with word bank with their answer keys. The Google Drive materials include directions for using the materials, the glossary, 2 reading passages, the comprehension questions and answer key, the multiple-meaning task and answer key, the word search puzzles and the crossword puzzle with word bank, and the answer keys for the puzzles.

You can use this resource remotely in 3 ways:

a) When teaching synchronously or asynchronously online, use the Google Drive version.

b) Use TpT's Digital Tool with the PDF version and create a resource your students can use on a device.

c) For students to do on their own: Send photocopies of the reading passage, comprehension questions, multiple-meaning words task, and puzzles home. (You may wish to send just 1 word search home). Alternatively, email those pages to students and tell them to print them out themselves, if they have access to printers. Tell students to read the reading passage and answer the questions. Tell students to do the multiple-meaning words task. Tell students to do the crossword puzzle and 1 of the word searches. Ask students to send/email their work back to you for correction. Or, if you wish, you can also give students the answer keys and they can correct their work themselves.

After using the materials in this resource, your students will have a better understanding of the reasons for impeaching someone and how the impeachment process works.
