SC.1.E.6.1 Recognize that water, rocks, soil, and living organisms are found on Earth's surface.
TEKS 1.5 Matter and energy. The student knows that objects have properties and patterns. The student is expected to:
(A) classify objects by observable properties such as larger and smaller, heavier and lighter, shape, color, and texture.
1.7 Earth and space. The student knows that the natural world includes rocks, soil, and water that can be observed in cycles, patterns, and systems. The student is expected to:
(A) observe, compare, describe, and sort components of soil by size, texture, and color.
(B) identify and describe a variety of natural sources of water, including streams, lakes, and oceans.
1.9 Organisms and environments. The student knows that the living environment is composed of relationships between organisms and the life cycles that occur. The student is expected to:
(A) sort and classify living and nonliving things based upon whether they have basic needs and produce offspring.
All of our text is checked with multiple metrics to assure it is at an appropriate complexity for the student. By using multiple metrics, our experienced and knowledge staff are better able to determine an appropriate grade level rating. In most cases (we are still working on updating all text), you will see our text marked as Approaching, On-Grade, or Advanced per a specific grade.
We are also careful to create text with an appropriate length using a well-established norm (Grade Level x 100 + 100/300 words). We do this so our text to be used not just in the science classroom to support content, but also to be used in a reading classroom to support the development of strong readers. All of our text comes with at least 5 ELA-style questions for this purpose.
Candlelight Science is a group of educator/writers. All have been (most still are) traditional classroom teachers with an average of 20 years of experience. We started our work because of a local need, but quickly realized the need for high quality, inexpensive resources was great. In response, we continue to produce science readers with multiple reading levels (compatible with CCSS text-complexity requirements), lesson plans, and even assessments to make the lives of teachers easier and more productive.
