I use this lesson/PowerPoint at the start of every poetry unit with my students. It offers up practice and achievable tips and tricks for what students can do to better understand poetry, in particular when they encounter a poem that gives them trouble.
Included with the 20 Tips and Tricks in PowerPoint format, there are also accompanying teaching notes. These notes provide examples, offer fuller explanations, as well as pedagogic rationales that will more easily "sell" these tips and tricks to your students.
Also included is a two-page easy-reference handout for your students. (However, in truth, I usually make the students write out the tips and tricks to have more ownership over their learning.)
The teaching notes are also included in PDF format, so that if you do not like using PowerPoint, or want the teaching notes in paper format, they are easy to print out and keep at your side.
All in all, there are 40 pages in all, but I think it would be more accurate to call it a content-full 25-page document.
I hope you find this Poetry Tips and Tricks lesson as useful as I do, and that your students develop poetry reading skills that will last them a lifetime!
