Product Description
This is a great experiment to do with an insect unit, especially if you are studying ants in the classroom. To do this experiment, discuss with the students beforehand about what types of human foods that they think ants like to eat. Tell students that they will be doing an experiment to see whether ants prefer carbohydrates (bread), honey (sweets), or proteins (cheese). Get a paper plate and lay a the food out into different sections of the plate. The sheet that I have made is a recording sheet. Have students draw the items of food before. Then take the paper plate with the food on it and lay it out by an ant hill. Come back in an hour or two to see your findings. Have the students redraw what is happening. Make sure that they also draw the ants. Where are most of the ants? Is there a trail of ants going in a certain direction. Come back as a class and discuss your findings. Were their predictions right?
