Students will first close read a brief article on the reasons for exploration. A graphic organizer is included to help students research and take notes while they search for information on Explorers.
Students will then take a look at primary sources from the Library of Congress (Copyright free) while thinking "What Were they saying?" by filling in speech and thought bubbles that are embedded into each of the Explorer themed pictures, photographs, and artistic representations.
On the back of each of the primary sources, students have a graphic organizer which they will fill in based on "What they see, What they Know, and What they still have questions about."
This is a student-centered, interactive activity that kids will have fun with, while also using their researching skills to discover more information on explorers.
Included in this are also two options for final assessment. Students can either complete the research-based essay or a presentation where students will teach the class the information he/she learned throughout.
Students will have no choice but to use their critical thinking skills during this interactive history project.
