Have you ever asked your students to explain what the mean tells us and all they can tell you is HOW to find it? Most students don't have a good idea of what the mean actually MEANS. This is a fun, engaging activity that all kids are sure to understand. They will come away with an easy to remember experience that will allow them to actually UNDERSTAND what the mean tells us about a set of data. Besides, the use of candy will motivate any learner :)
I have included a detailed lesson plan, written for two levels of learners, including prompts and guiding questions for the lesson, an activity sheet for each level and entrance/exit slip assessment for each level.
The first level is for learners who are new to the concepts of mean, median and mode. This will allow for discovery of the concepts and how they describe data.
The second level is for students familiar with the mechanics of finding the mean, median and mode, but are not sure what they actually tell us about the data.
You can use this lesson as part of my graphing and statistics project found here: Project
