Description

Get your students thinking like historians and evaluating evidence.

In this lesson students have to infer and reach a reasoned judgement based on the evidence at hand. This includes primary sources and information to help them decide its reliability.

This lesson can be taught to the whole class from the front but works just as well as stations lesson by simply printing out the slides as whole pages and using them for information gathering.

The class work in pairs to decide whether Richard III killed his nephews, Prince Edward and Prince Richard in the Tower of London. They use the evidence and given information to decide whether he did it, someone else with a mother motive did it or they were sent into exile. There is also opportunity for the class to make up their own theories based on what they discover.

The evidence is not given to them all at once, instead the teacher drip feeds it throughout the lesson. This is in a bid to challenge preconceived ideas and see if pupils will change their minds when faced with new data or sources.

They begin with an outline of the story on the board. Then in 3 minute intervals more evidence is presented either on the whiteboard or on a sheet of clues.

The last task is to write an extended piece (like a DBQ) explaining what they think happened to the boys and why.

The lesson fits with the common core requirement for students to analyse, evaluate and consider causation and consequence. The level descriptors of Emerging, Developing, Securing and Mastering relate to the historical skills needed to identify, describe, explain and then evaluate at the top end of ability.

The zip file contains:

- 16 slide, fully animated powerpoint

- Answer worksheet with a table to complete

- the slides are annotated underneath for the teacher to explain the activity at each point.

My classes have had great fun with this lesson. It can stand alone or be used as part of a project, for example on monarchy or the early Tudors.
