Great introductory lab for chemical equilibrium and Le Chatelier's principle. Lab uses basic equipment and water. Students transfer water from one beaker (reactants) to another beaker (products) with varying amounts for the forward reaction versus the reverse reaction. Lab address the preconceived notion that chemical equilibrium is achieved when the amount of products is equal to the amount of reactants. Students see in the lab that chemical equilibrium is achieved when the amount of reactants and products is not changing.
Supports *NGSS standard HS-PS1-6: Refine the design of a chemical system by specifying a change in conditions that would produce increased amounts of products at equilibrium.
